Insurance Glossary – Understanding The Coverages

  • Accounts Receivable Coverage - provides coverage for uncollectible Accounts Receivable if the Accounts Receivable becomes uncollectible as the result of the destruction of billing records by a covered peril such as fire. This is not credit and collections coverage. This coverage will not apply when a customer does not pay a bill. Rather, the coverage applies when the records are destroyed by a covered peril making it impossible to determine who owes money to your firm.

  • Auto Liability - Commercial auto liability coverage provides protection for business-owned and scheduled commercial vehicles. Coverage typically includes Property and Personal damage to others, such as Bodily Injuries and Lost Wages, Medical Payments, Uninsured and Underinsured liability limits to protect you in the event that an at fault party collided with you and had either no insurance or was carrying limits too low to cover your losses from the accident.

  • Auto Physical Damage – provides coverage through two main areas, Comprehensive which covers against physical damages to your car from hazards such as wind, hail, vandalism, animal strike and falling trees. Collision covers physical damage to your vehicle if you are at fault in a collision accident. These coverages are provided on an actual cash value basis meaning the cost to replace with new property of like kind and quality, less depreciation.

  • Boiler & Machinery/Comprehensive & Equipment Breakdown Coverage - provides coverage for property damage due to the explosion of a pressure vessel. It further protects your firm against financial loss caused by equipment breakdown and can insure electrical apparatus and computer equipment against power surge and electrical arching.

  • Business Income/Extra Expense - provides coverage for lost income, continuing expenses and the extra cost of resuming your operations after an insured/covered loss. A standard property policy does not include this coverage.

  • Cargo Legal Liability - Coverage for physical loss or damage to cargo for which you assume liability under a bill of lading or moving contract while the cargo is being loaded onto of off of your truck or while your truck in is transit.

  • Crime, Forgery & Employee Fidelity Coverage - Provide protection for employee theft and loss to money and securities not covered by a standard property policy.

  • Data & Media Recreation Coverage - provides coverage to reconstruct computer data, software etc… after a covered peril, such as fire, destroys computer information and back-ups. A standard property policy provides no Data & Media Recreation Coverage.

  • Directors & Officers Insurance - provides protection for certain Directors & Officers decisions not covered by general liability insurance.

  • Employee Benefits Liability - protects your company(s) against claims which arise from the errant administration of certain employee benefits plans such as employee health coverage, group life etc…

  • Employment Practices Liability - provides coverage for employment related claims such as wrongful termination and sexual harassment.

  • General Liability – provides protection against claims of bodily injury, property damage, personal injury (including Slander or Libel) and advertising injury. It is used to protect your business against incidents which may occur on your premises or at other covered locations where you normally conduct business.

  • Hired and Non-Owned Automobile Liability - Hired Auto Liability protects against automobile negligence claims which arise when your business rents or hires a vehicle. Non-Owned Automobile Liability coverage protects against automobile negligence claims brought against you for claims which arise from your employee's use of their own vehicles while conducting business on your behalf.

  • Hired and Non-Owned Automobile Physical Damage – provides physical damage (comprehensive and collision) for commercial vehicles you rent for your business use (commonly shuttle use straight trucks).

  • Inland Marine Property Coverage – Provides coverage for your Movers Equipment, such as pads, dollies, forklifts, skids, vaults, lifts, etc. Coverage extends to off premises locations as well as your scheduled locations.

  • Occupational Accident – Provides coverages similar to Workers Compensation but with certain time limits and monetary limits which make it an affordable alternative to Workers Compensation for your Independent Owner Operator or Contract Drivers. Our special program provides extensive coverages and includes employees of your IOO or Contract Drivers as well as their casual laborers.

  • Ordinance or Law Coverage - Provides coverage for the increased building costs and demolition costs due to a change in building code (such as changes required by the Americans with Disabilities Act). Provides coverage if after a covered loss, the undamaged portion of a building must be destroyed due to a local ordinance.

  • Pollution Liability Coverage - provides coverage for pollution claims brought against you. Can be purchased to protect against sudden and accidental incidents such as a spill or pollution occurring over time a long time span. General Liability policies typically exclude all pollution related claims.

  • Professional Liability Coverage - Provides coverage for errors in professional judgment. This coverage is very important to those operations which are records storage, data storage or consulting in nature. A general liability policy excludes professional liability claims.

  • Property – provides coverage against specified losses or perils at pre-set limits for scheduled locations as specified in your policy for physical property owned by your company. Buildings, contents including desks, cabinets and other furniture. A deductible normally applies to these coverages.

  • Warehouse Legal Liability - Provides coverage for physical loss or damage to your customers’ storage items while stored in scheduled warehouses owned, leased or subcontracted by you under a warehouse receipt or other storage contract.

  • Workers Compensation Coverage – Provides coverage in sections. Coverage A, Statutory Benefits for direct medical related expenses for bodily injury for an employee injured on the job. Coverage A typically is issued with three limits of coverage. Bodily Injury by for each Accident, Bodily Injury by Disease Per Employee and Bodily Injury by Disease total policy limit. Coverage B, Employers Liability; i.e., an employee claiming that your negligence caused his or her injury.

  • Valuable Papers Coverage - provides coverage to reconstruct valuable papers after a covered peril, such as fire, destroys records. Examples of valuable papers are: architect plans, notes, deeds etc… A standard property policy provides little or no Valuable Papers Coverage.

  • Umbrella (Excess) Policy - provides additional liability protection in excess of the underlying policies. Usually purchased in increments of $1,000,000. We have limits available from $1,000,000 to $20,000,000.
